As a Dutch student, Peter Peverelli witnessed the final year of the Cultural Revolution. Peter’s book gives an insight of the experiences of the young Western students. They had to rely heavily on one another to find their way in a culture completely alien to them.
The children of the Jingpo ethnicity in the China/Burma border area are very much gifted in arts and language learning, but also heavily threatened by drugs and HIV/AIDS, while having little access to good education. The grassroots NGO Prop Roots, permanently based in the Jingpo countyside, aims at fostering their confidence and individuality, by means of creative art and language education and intercultural exchange. CRTV interviews co-founder Dr Anton Lustig, a Dutch painter and musician, and also the world’s main expert on the Jingpo’s language.
