Taiwan Film "Monga" to Compete for Oscar
Source:CRI
The Taiwan film "Monga" directed by Doze Niu has applied to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film title at the 83rd Academy Awards next February, Sohu.com reports.
Before "Monga," the romantic film "Hear Me" featuring Peng Yu-yen was to represent Taiwan films vying for an Oscar this year. But 'Hear Me" was excluded as the release date was August 2009, two months earlier than the official release date of October 1, 2009, to compete for an Oscar.
Taiwan film officials said "Monga" was chosen because the spirit of the film is recognized by local audiences, and it has grossed NTD200 million (about US$6 million) at box offices on the island.
While "Monga" has bowled over audiences in Taiwan, its graphic violence and portrayal of gangsters have prevented it from being shown on the Chinese mainland.

Vivian Chow's comeback film premieres in HK
Source:CRI
Veteran actress Vivian Chow's comeback film "All about Love(得閒炒飯)" has premiered in Hong Kong.
Helmed by award-winning director Ann Hui, the romantic comedy is about the reunion of two Hong Kong women who had shared a lesbian relationship ten years earlier.
Chow explains why she has chosen this film for her return to the big screen after a thirteen-year absence.
"The film is just about ordinary female love, and about commitment... The main thing is the love and commitment of lovers. And that's our selling point."
Sandra Ng, the other lead actress, says when taking on her role, she was very sensitive about personal hygiene as she did not want to put off her on-screen lover.
"When we were shooting kissing and intimate scenes, she was actually pretty relaxed. I was frequently brushing my teeth so I wouldn't have bad breath. I really wouldn't want my 'other half' to be disgusted with me so I prepared myself the best I could."
Also showing at the premiere was director Hui. She says it is her hope that after watching this film, people will be a bit more open-minded about homosexuality.
"All about Love" is scheduled to hit movie theaters in late August.

Source: CRI
John Woo's upcoming martial-arts drama "Reign of Assassins" ("Jianyu"劍雨) has released a new trailer which reveals the film's star-studded cast, Sina.com.cn reports.
Lead actors show up one by one in the 75-second trailer which follows the assassination plot targeting a retired murderess.
"Reign of Assassins" is about a retired murderess (Michelle Yeoh) who lives with her husband, an ordinary and optimistic mailman (Jung Woo-Sung) in a small town set in ancient China. The woman owns a treasure that attracts many assassins.
The killers are performed by Wang Xueqi, Kelly Lin, Shawn Yue, Leon Dai and Barbie Hsu.
"The theme of the film is not about assassins and revenge but about love, which is the core message of my films. People should search for a way to get along with each other instead of hate and grudge," John Woo was quoted by Sina.com.cn as saying.
The director also revealed that the key character in the film, the ordinary mailman played by Jung Woo-Sung, will make the film more mysterious.
The film will premiere on September 3 at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. The domestic release is set for September 28.

TRUE LEGEND lijkt me een erg interessante film.
