Shanren

Shanren is one of China’s largest indie folk bands of the moment.  Shanren mixes indigenous music with modern styles, and bring this with a variety of traditional instruments such as the Xianzi, Qinqin and Dabiya (four-stringed plucked instruments) and Xianggu and Sun drum (percussion).

Shanren are headliners on China’s major music festivals and perform on a wide range of national television programs; with both they reach an audience of tens of millions. Wild, eccentric and charismatic, Shanren are true ambassadors of China’s ethnic diversity and emerging musical creativity.

Shanren were rated as number four most promising international act at Canadian Music Week 2012, as part of a North American tour that received serious attention from the media, including Huffington Post, Washington Post and National Geographic, who described the band as “The Closest Thing To The Pogues That we have ever heard a Chinese come ” Since then the band has been invited to perform all over the world -. Bali Spirit Festival (Indonesia), Turtle Island Festival (Japan), WOMADelaide (Australia) and Womad New -Zeeland.

AM444

AM444

AM444 is the surprising cooperation of Dutch producer Jay.Soul (Corey / GPvNL, 08Bar, Mr.Windmill) with one of China’s most talented underground artists, singer ChaCha (RBMA 2011 Kode9, Jimi Tenor).

The group originated in Shanghai in 2010 and since then released 2 CD’s, vinyl 12 “and now a new EP with the single “secondment Toi” a duet with French music icon -M- (Matthieu Chedid)!

AM444 sounds like the Chinese cousin of Björk who meets the Dutch half brother of J Dilla, or Grace Jones makes a boat trip with Little Dragon from England to Shanghai. Diverse and increasingly difficult to put in one genre, but always soulful, dreamy vocals in Chinese and hip-hop, funk and electro driven dubby beats as a thread.

Live AM444 is working hard on the road with tours in China, 2 mini-tours in France, plus appearances in Russia and the Sakifo festival in Reunion, Africa.

What do you think? :)
